Spanishs Class Changes!

As a result of the recent surveys, we’ve decided to make the following changes to class:

CLASSROOM ATMOSPHERE: Free seating is a privilege and will continue as long as the right is respected and the learning environment is maintained*. The majority of the class will be conducted in Spanish except under the following conditions: grammar explanations/questions and/or when specific permission has been granted. When you don’t understand, it is your responsibility to stop the class and ask. Not using Spanish when the class is in “Spanish Mode” will result in a Págame and a loss of 5 citizenship points. If I am caught not using Spanish when we are in “Spanish Mode,” the first student who points it out IN SPANISH, will receive 1 Euro. “Spanish Mode” will be designated with a sign placed upon the white board.

WARM-UPS: Warm-ups MUST be IN PROGRESS at the bell or you are considered tardy. Warm-ups will mainly consist of review exercises, writing down notes or vocabulary, or self-correcting of homework. At times, songs, self-quizzes, and reflections may also serve as appropriate warm-ups.

HOMEWORK: Homework will mainly consist of workbook exercises, exercises from handouts, and homework assigned from the Storybooks. Homework will continue to be assigned Monday through Thursday, leaving weekends and holiday/vacation periods free*. Homework coupons will continue to be awarded, but in order to use them, all previous homework from the quarter must be turned in AND an A or B grade must have been earned on the most recent Structures’ Test*.

VOCABULARY: Learning the vocabulary for the appropriate chapter and maintaining the knowledge of ALL previous vocabulary is the SOLE responsibility of the student. As an experiment, you may choose to either make vocabulary flash cards or write the Spanish and English a minimum of 5x each for chapter 8 for Spanish 2 and chapter 9 for Spanish 1. We will reevaluate the success of experiment at the end of the appropriate chapter and at that time determine whether this experiment should continue, be modified, or some other system be put in its place.

ASSESSMENTS: All quizzes and skills (listening, reading, speaking, and writing) tests will continue to be unannounced and can be given in any order or multiple times to assess long-term retention of the material. Vocabulary and structure tests will be announced with a minimum of 3 day’s notice and will include the content to be assessed. After a vocabulary/structure test has been given on a particular topic, an unannounced version of the same topic may be given to assess long-term retention.

RE-TAKE TESTS: Anyone who receives a C or lower on any ANNOUNCED vocabulary/structure test will have the option to retake a different test on the same material either before school or during lunch. You MUST sign up in advance to retake any test and once you’ve signed up, you are obligated to take the retake test. If you fail to do so, you will receive an F for the retake. In order to be eligible for the re-take test, all homework for that particular chapter, including homework previously excused with a homework pass, must be turned in completed and a mandatory study session must be attended. The retake grade will REPLACE the previously earned grade. The highest grade one can earn on a retake will be a B. You may only retake a maximum of 2 tests per quarter.

*Does not apply to Period 4

Flash Card Program!

Hey, Guys!

Here’s the link for the free flash-card program that I talked to you about. Download the .zip file and inside there are both the PC version and the MAC version. Install it to your computer. There are default vocabulary lists that come included with the program, but they may not be the same vocabulary we use in class. In the handouts section under each chapter, I’ve included a link to download the vocabulary list for that chapter so you can import the list into the program. I’ve only created the list for Spanish 1-Ch 9 so far. I will add Spanish 2-Ch 8 tomorrow. I will add more lists as they become available.

Give the program a try. I think it will help with your vocabulary!!! :-)

**UPDATE**I was having trouble with the vocabulary list that I made on Windows computers. I adjusted some settings and hopefully it fixed it. If you’re running on a Windows computer, please let me know if the importing of the vocabulary works or not. If it does not, I will try again tomorrow after I get to school and can get my hands on a Windows machine.

I again will be missing class!! :-(

Hi, Guys!

**New** Mini-Poll

Hey, Guys!

I’ve boiled down the previous poll into the essential questions with the top 2 or 3 responses. I’ve also added a couple of new questions. This poll is extremely short. Please take the time to respond. We’ll make some decisions this week based on the results of both polls.

The links for both polls follow!

Test, test, here, test, test, test!

Yesterday, I was wrong. It wasn’t a test at the door. It was one of those dang solicitors who bother you during dinner. (I think I would have rather had a test! ;-)).

But I know there’s a test around here somewhere. “Here, test, test, test! Here, test, test, test!”

Now I know why you’re supposed to have your tests on a leash!

I hope I don’t have to go to the test shelter!

Oh, and by the way, don’t forget to take the survey. Move down the page a little for the link!

¡Hola, chicos y chicas!

I might be studying if I were you. What, you might ask? Oh, I don’t know. Chapter 6/7 for Spanish 1 and Chapter 5/6 for Spanish 2.

Ding Dong!

Oh, hold on. It’s a test at the door! ;-)

Thanks Period 4!

Hola, Period 4!

Thanks for being good today and for those students who have had the courage to be honest even if it meant confessing and suffering the consequences. I know that honesty and integrety don’t come easy and the right choices are usually the toughest.

I truly believe that if this level of honesty continues, we will again be able to build the trust between us and you can show me how intelligent, how honest, and how fun you guys can really be. I’ve seen it before and I know that I will see it again!

We can get past this! :-)
Hasta mañana!
