Meet Profe B!

Soy muy guapo, ¿no?

¡Hola! ¡Soy Profe B!

I grew up in Michigan in various suburbs of Detroit and Saginaw including Keego Harbor, Highland, Frankenmuth, and Livonia. I attended two high schools: freshman year at Frankenmuth High, home of the Eagles, and I graduated from Livonia Franklin High in 1989. Go Patriots!

In 1992 I was working for Northwest Airlines in Detroit and they transferred me to Los Angeles to work on the Spanish Interpreter Desk. I got laid off later that year, but remained in LA. I soon got a job working for Princess Cruises and then in 1995, for United Airlines. I worked for United Airlines until just after 9/11, at which time I took a leave of absence to take a job at Arcadia High School teaching Spanish.

I taught at Arcadia HS for four years and now, here I am in Las Vegas teaching Spanish at Silverado HS! :-) I’ve been teaching at Silverado for three years.

Why Foreign Languages?
Just before my sophomore year, my parents told me I had to take two years of a foreign language. They didn’t care which language I took, but I had to take one. I chose Spanish because I thought it was the easiest. :-(

I had an excellent Spanish 1 teacher named Señorita Wylie. (¡Hola, Señora Wylie!) I learned so much from her and she encouraged me to take German. So, during my junior year, I took both Spanish and German (Hallo, Frau Evans!). And then during my senior year, I took Spanish, German, and French (Bonjour, Grand-maman!).

I continued taking all three languages during my first two years of college at which time I dropped French after taking Intro to French Literature. I ended up with a Bachelor’s Degree in German from California State University, Northridge, with credit equivalency of a major in Spanish.

Why A Teacher?
All my life I wanted to be a veterinarian. I even was part of the Veterinary Science Club in my local 4-H in Frankenmuth. But, during my senior year of high school, I was a Student Assistant for a Spanish 1 teacher. She was going to be absent and they didn’t have a Spanish substitute, so she asked me to conduct the class while the French teacher supervised. From that moment on, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. Despite that revelation, I started Wayne State University that next fall as a pre-vet student and it wasn’t until I moved to California did I actively pursue teaching.

Why Silverado?
For the past seven years I have taught Spanish using the TPRS method but my school also required me to incorporate the textbook into each and every lesson. As the years progressed, I found this more and more difficult to accomplish successfully. The more I integrated the textbook into my classes, the less actual Spanish learning was going on. I needed a new opportunity where I could teach using TPRS full-time. I knew this was the best method for my students. I knew of Profe Sánchez through TPRS and welcomed the opportunity to work with her. The rest is history!

Picket Fences, The Practice, Boston Public, Survivor, CSI, Law & Order, Rescue Me!, Designing Women, Ellen, A Different World, Ghost Hunters, Design on a Dime, Animal Documentaries, Crime Documentaries, and, um…, ok, I’ll admit it, Big Brother.

Favorite Music?
If you were to take a look at my iPod, you’d find an eclectic collection of music, but my all time favorite group is The Cure. Current favorites include Green Day, Blink 182, Linkin Park, All-American Rejects, Jimmy Eat World, Pepper, Korn, Rammstein, Papa Roach, My Chemical Romance, Matchbook Romance, Dashboard Confessional, MXPX, Plain White T’s, Taking Back Sunday, The Academy Is, AFI, Alkaline Trio, Fall Out Boy, Panic! at the Disco, Mest, Relient K, Senses Fail, Snow Patrol, and pretty much anything on Area 108 or idobe radio. I also like most 80s music, punk, emo, alternative, and some 40s, 50s and 60s. I can’t think of anything I like from the 70s, and I don’t like country, disco or rap/hip hop (sorry :( ).

Favorite Movies?
I’m an avid movie-goer. I see a movie practically every weekend. I like horror, action, drama, and romantic-comedies. I see so many movies, most just blur together, but a few, really good ones stand out. Some recent favorites are Must Love Dogs, Bad News Bears, Cinderella Man, Monster-In-Law, House of Wax, The Interpreter, Fever Pitch, Hostage, Guess Who?, The Pacifier, Hitch, Hotel Rwanda, Phantom of the Opera, Spanglish, National Treasure, Ray, Saw, Friday Night Lights, Cellular, Suspect Zero, Garden State, and The Notebook.

Favorite Books?
As a kid, I loved “Watership Down” and anything by Stephen King. I regret that I don’t have as much time to read now as I would like.

I think I just about covered it all. If there’s something I forgot and you think I should include, or if you have any questions, please contact me using the form below or leave a comment and I’ll be sure to answer! :-)
